The movie How to Train Your Dragon is a beloved animated fantasy-adventure film (2010) from DreamWorks Animation, loosely based on the 2003 children's book series by Cressida Cowell. The film explores themes of empathy, tolerance, and challenging generational tradition through an unlikely friendship.
Plot Summary
The story is set in the mythical Viking village of Berk, which is constantly under attack by dragons who steal livestock. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is an undersized, inventive, and clumsy teenage outcast—and the son of the village chieftain, Stoick the Vast. Unlike the other Vikings, Hiccup struggles with the expectation of becoming a fierce dragon slayer.
During a raid, Hiccup uses a bolas launcher of his own design to shoot down a highly rare and feared dragon: a Night Fury. When he tracks the creature down, he finds he cannot bring himself to kill it. Instead, he begins to cautiously befriend the injured dragon, naming him Toothless due to his retractable teeth.
A Secret Bond: Hiccup discovers that Toothless is unable to fly because the bolas severed half of his tail fin. Hiccup engineers a prosthetic fin and a special harness that requires him to manually operate it while riding. Through their secret shared flights and interactions, Hiccup learns that dragons are not the mindless killers the Vikings believe them to be, but intelligent, playful, and loyal creatures motivated by fear.
The Big Reveal: Using his newfound knowledge of dragon behavior, Hiccup excels in the village's dragon-fighting class, subduing the captured beasts without harming them, much to the confusion of his peers, including his crush, Astrid. When Hiccup must kill a dragon for his final exam, he refuses to do so, causing Toothless to emerge from hiding to protect him. The truth is revealed, leading to Toothless's capture and Stoick's tragic discovery of the dragons' true lair.
The Final Battle: The Vikings sail to the dragons' nest, where they awaken the enormous, fire-breathing leader, the Red Death, who controls the smaller dragons through fear. Hiccup, Astrid, and the other teens rally to ride the trained dragons to the nest, helping to free Toothless. In a climactic air battle, Hiccup and Toothless defeat the Red Death, but Hiccup is severely injured, losing his left leg.
A New Beginning: The film concludes with Hiccup waking up in Berk, now admired by his community. The Vikings and dragons have established a peaceful co-existence, with dragons fully integrated into village life. Both Hiccup and Toothless receive new prosthetics.
